I have been working with white tiles since the late 1990s.
The influence came from time in NYC where I used the subway
and, over time, became intrigued by the white tile covered
dilapidated stations.
It amazed me that something as meaningless as a square white
ceramic tile can become so powerful and visceral once cracked.
The second big surprise came when I tried to control the cuts I
would make in the tiles: I would make a perfect cut but when I
would try to crack the cut completely through,”bring it into
reality” it would, to varies degrees, go its own way .
So, in a sense, these pieces are about our “best laid plans”
and the surprises an adventures that ensue when we try to
make them work.
